Gol de Letra was launched in 1998 by two Brazilian footballing stars, Rai and Leonardo. Their dream is simple: to give a future to young people living in the 'favelas' (shanty towns) by means of a comprehensive education programme bringing together education, sport and culture. Community and family involvement is key to the success of the foundation, whose work is now recognised by UNICEF. The foundation is present in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
The Jogo Aberto (Open Game) project is aimed at 300 children in Rio aged 7 to 17. They follow a one-year course combining sport, academic and social education. The sports on offer vary according to the age group.
Role of the ENGIE Foundation
