Medical examinations conducted in 2015 on 382 children in the Trairi area showed that 50% were anaemic, 19% were overweight and 21% were suffering from infections.
To address these issues and improve the children's health, Instituto Melhores Dias launched a teaching programme on food and hygiene in 2016. This programme was rolled out in 32 schools in the area, targeting both children and parents. Iron supplement treatments were also provided.
Comparative medical checks are performed regularly to assess the efficiency of the programme.
Instituto Melhores Dias has been working with Brazil's poorest communities since 1993.
