  • GOAL : TRAIN ILLITERATE WOMEN TO EQUIP THEIR VILLAGES WITH SOLAR ENERGY
  • COUNTRY : Philippines (Asia)
  • DATE : 2016-2017
  • COMMITMENT : Access to energy for all, social inclusion of women

The project

The aim of the Barefoot Women Solar Engineers project is to transform illiterate women into 'Solar Mamas' who bring electricity to their villages. Every year, hundreds of women from poor villages around the world undergo six months of training at the Barefoot College in Rajasthan, India. Once trained, the women equip their communities with solar energy (photovoltaic panels, solar kits, solar street lights, etc.). Rural Electronic Workshops are set up to ensure maintenance of the equipment. Last but not least, residents are educated in how to use energy responsibly.

Role of the ENGIE Foundation

In 2016, the ENGIE Foundation decided to support the programme for Filipino women.
